STORE-CUPBOARD ESSENTIALS

To cook low cost meals from scratch it is necessary to have some store-cupboard essentials. Although this list looks a bit daunting, most of the items are not too expensive and can be built up over time by adding a couple of items to your shopping basket each supermarket visit. This list is not exhaustive but I have listed the ingredients that I always make sure I have on hand.

BASICS

Plain Flour

Self-Raising Flour

Bread Flour

Dried Yeast

Baking Powder

Dried Pasta (I always have fusilli, spaghetti & lasagne sheets)

Long Grain Rice

Stock Cubes (beef, chicken & vegetable)

Sugar (white & brown)

Tomato Puree

TINS

Plum Tomatoes

Chopped Tomatoes

Kidney Beans

Chickpeas

Tuna

Salmon

Sardines

Anchovies

BOTTLES & JARS

Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive oil (not absolutely essential but nice to have for salad dressings, etc.)

Vegetable Oil ( I use rapeseed oil)

Soy Sauce

Mustard (I usually keep Dijon and Wholegrain)

Ketchup

Vinegars (I always have Red Wine, White Wine & Balsamic)

Olives

Capers

Mayonnaise

Tabasco

Worcestershire Sauce

Runny Honey

DRIED HERBS & SPICES

Mixed Herbs

Chilli (powder and flakes)
